What is a General Practitioner (GP) Supervisor?

GP supervisors take part in the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) program to assist health professionals (GP registrars) learning in general practice. GP supervisors are experienced general practitioners who oversee patient care and set up the relationship between the registrar and the practice they are learning in.

Becoming a GP supervisor can be an effective way of sourcing new doctors, along with providing future doctors with advice and skills that they will continue to use for the rest of their career.

And on top of all that, you get paid for it!

Becoming a Training Practice and GP Supervisor

GP registrars must work in accredited training facilities during their involvement with the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) program. Therefore the medical practice must successfully complete this program to become an accredited training practice. Training facilities are accredited by either the Australian College of Rural & Remote Medicine (ACRRM) or the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) (or both) depending on their location and the range of experience they can offer the registrar.

What are the Benefits of being a GP Supervisor?

There are many benefits of being involved with registrar training. For the practice it means you can have a continuous stream of new GP registrars (usually every six months) bringing new skills, ideas and positive influences.

The registrars are part of your workforce, so they can cover additional appointments and take on a fair share of the administrative work. They can also help with audits and significant event analysis.

Whilst the GP registrar cannot complete all of their training in your medical practice, it’s a great way to build a relationship and network of GP registrars who may be willing to come back to work in your practice after they have completed all of their training.

On top of all this, as well as your practice being paid to train GP registrars, you may actually enjoy it!
